Experts Warn Against Using Fertility Drugs Without Doctor’s Prescription

Gynaecologists have cautioned women against using fertility drugs, particularly ovulation-inducing medications, without a doctor’s prescription or supervision.
According to reports by PUNCH Healthwise, the experts stressed that self-medication in fertility treatment has become widespread due to the ease of obtaining such drugs over the counter and societal pressure to conceive, but it poses serious health risks.
Medical specialists highlighted that unsupervised use of fertility drugs can lead to Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS), a potentially life-threatening condition that causes fluid retention, abdominal swelling, nausea, breathing difficulties, and rapid weight gain.
They also warned of the increased likelihood of ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, mood swings, irregular menstrual cycles, weight gain, and a heightened long-term risk of ovarian or endometrial cancer.
Experts further explained that misuse of these medications can increase the chances of multiple pregnancies, which often come with complications such as gestational diabetes, hypertension, and preterm birth. They advised that women experiencing difficulties conceiving should undergo proper medical evaluation, including fertility checks for both partners, to identify the root cause before any medication is prescribed.
Health professionals emphasised that fertility drugs should only be taken under the supervision of qualified specialists such as fertility consultants or gynaecologists, who can provide appropriate monitoring, including hormone level testing and ultrasound scans.
They warned that self-medication not only endangers women’s health but may also worsen infertility if the underlying cause is not accurately diagnosed.
