"Enemy of Democracy": Kenneth Okonkwo Calls for Akpabio’s Removal Over Electoral Act

Nollywood veteran and Labour Party chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo has launched a scathing attack on Senate President Godswill Akpabio, labeling him an "enemy of democracy." Speaking on Monday, February 9, 2026, Okonkwo called for Akpabio’s immediate removal from office, accusing him of deliberately sabotaging the amendment of the Electoral Act to favor the ruling elite ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Okonkwo expressed deep frustration over the Senate's perceived "foot-dragging" on critical reforms, particularly those concerning the electronic transmission of results and the strengthening of the BVAS framework. He argued that the current legislative leadership is more interested in maintaining a flawed system that allows for manipulation than in ensuring the will of the people prevails. According to him, the delay in passing the law is a strategic move to leave the electoral umpire, INEC, with insufficient time for implementation.
The lawyer-turned-politician warned that Nigeria’s democracy is under threat if the National Assembly continues to prioritize partisan interests over national stability. He urged Nigerians to mobilize and demand a leadership change in the Senate if the current administration fails to deliver a transparent legal roadmap for future polls. Okonkwo’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among opposition figures who believe that the 10th Assembly is not doing enough to reform the nation's electoral processes.
Do you agree with Kenneth Okonkwo that the Senate President is intentionally delaying electoral reforms? Can Nigeria achieve a truly free and fair election in 2027 without these amendments being signed soon? Share your comments below!
