Egypt Edges Super Eagles 2-1 in Pre-AFCON Friendly

Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Egypt in a high-profile pre-Africa Cup of Nations friendly at Cairo International Stadium on Tuesday night. The friendly served as a final competitive tune-up for both sides ahead of AFCON 2025 in Morocco, which kicks off later this month. The match was lively and competitive, offering both teams a chance to assess tactics, fitness, and squad depth before the continental tournament gets under way.
The Pharaohs opened the scoring in the 28th minute when midfielder Mahmoud Saber capitalised on a well-crafted build-up play to put Egypt ahead. Nigeria responded strongly and drew level just before half-time through a Chidozie Awaziem header after a free kick was not cleanly dealt with by Egypt’s goalkeeper. The equaliser gave the Super Eagles confidence heading into the break, but Egypt regained the lead early in the second half when Mostafa Mohamed found the back of the net following a precise assist.
Nigeria’s preparation for AFCON was hindered by the absence of some key stars, and although the Eagles showed determination throughout the 90 minutes, they were unable to break down the Egyptian defence after falling behind. Egypt, playing without a few of their regular stars as well, demonstrated strong cohesion and control for much of the match, earning a confidence-boosting win in front of the home crowd. Both teams will now turn their focus fully to the tournament in Morocco, where Nigeria will open its campaign against Tanzania.
What do you think Nigeria must improve before the AFCON opener, and can the Super Eagles bounce back after this defeat? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
