Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is reported to be considering retirement from boxing after a tragic car accident in Nigeria that killed two of his close friends and team members, according to a family source. The 36-year-old boxer, who survived the collision with minor injuries, privately told relatives he plans to step away from the sport following the emotional toll of the incident, his uncle Adedamola Joshua said at the family home in Sagamu, Ogun State. The fatal crash occurred on December 29, 2025 along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and claimed the lives of Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, both long-time members of his boxing camp.
“The major thing there is that he has retired from boxing,” his uncle told reporters, explaining that family members feel a sense of relief at the decision because the stress of watching Joshua fight over the years had been emotionally difficult for them. Adedamola said Joshua communicated his decision directly to his family and expressed a desire to leave the sport “while the ovation is highest,” adding that the emotional burden of boxing and the recent loss has influenced his thinking. Joshua has also pledged long-term support for the families of Ghami and Ayodele, describing the two men as loyal supporters whose absence has deeply affected him.
Joshua’s exit from the sport is not yet confirmed by the boxer himself or his promotional team, and there has been no official public statement from Matchroom Boxing or Joshua on the matter.
What do you think about the possibility of Anthony Joshua stepping away from boxing at this stage of his career, and how might his legacy be remembered both inside and outside the ring? Comment below and share your thoughts.
