The Department of State Services (DSS) has formally arraigned five suspects before the Imo State High Court sitting in Mgbidi over the abduction of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and four other citizens along the Owerri–Onitsha Expressway.
The defendants—identified as Usman Aliyu (25, a.k.a Chonge), Babangida Aliyu (21), Mohammed Ali (23, a.k.a Smallie Pepper), Aminu Haliru, and Jiji Ibrahim—were arrested by a joint security force during intelligence-led operations across Rivers and Abia states following the October 1 mass kidnapping.

Three of the suspects are directly charged with the abduction of the corps members, collecting ransom in millions of naira and foreign currency, and illegal possession of military-grade firearms including AK-47 rifles, a pistol, and live ammunition.
The five defendants face charges bordering on criminal conspiracy, hostage-taking, extortion, and unlawful possession of firearms under Section 6 of the Imo State Prohibition of Hostage Taking and Related Offences Law.
All five suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges. Following an application by DSS prosecution counsel Ekezie Nwauzo, the presiding judge, Hon. Justice Emeka Orafu, ordered that the defendants remain in DSS custody pending trial.
Justice Orafu adjourned the case to October 22, 27, 28, and 29 for formal hearing.

“This is a major breakthrough in bringing those responsible for terrorizing travelers to justice... Security agencies will not relent until every individual involved in this act is prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

The 20 prospective corps members, who were traveling from Ibadan to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when their buses were intercepted, were successfully rescued on October 7 during a joint military and DSS raid in the Amakohia-Ubi forest.

The court proceedings mark a significant step toward ensuring accountability and restoring safety along critical interstate transit corridors.
