Democracy Over Consensus: Ekiti APC Youths Demand Open Primaries for House of Reps Seat

The youth wing of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has officially rejected the proposal of a consensus candidate for the Ekiti South Federal Constituency II seat ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement released on Saturday, April 11, 2026, the group voiced their opposition to any arrangement that would bypass a competitive primary process, arguing that such "backroom deals" stifle the voices of younger party members and potential aspirants.
The disagreement centers on reports that some party elders were pushing for a unified candidate to represent the Emure, Gboyin, and Ekiti East local government areas. However, the youth leaders, represented by the "Ekiti South APC Youth Vanguard," insist that an open and transparent primary is the only way to ensure the most popular and competent candidate emerges. They cautioned that imposing a candidate through consensus could lead to internal friction and voter apathy, potentially jeopardizing the party’s chances in the general polls.
By demanding a level playing field, the Ekiti APC youths are challenging the traditional influence of party hierarchies in the selection process. The state leadership of the APC has yet to issue a formal response, but political observers suggest that how the party manages these demands will be a significant test of its internal democracy and unity in the coming months.
Do you think the "consensus" model is an efficient way to prevent party infighting, or does it unfairly block fresh and younger talent from rising? Share your comments below!
