Okuama, Detained, Community Leaders, Delta State, Ughelli South Local Government Area

Residents of Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State celebrated on Wednesday after the Federal High Court sitting in Warri ordered the unconditional release of detained community leaders linked to the aftermath of the 2024 killing of military personnel in the area.

Justice Hyeladzira Nganjiwa delivered the ruling while deciding a motion brought under the Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules. The application had been filed by the detained leaders on 4 May 2026.

The court also fixed 13 July 2026 for the continuation of proceedings on the substantive matter.

As news of the ruling reached the community, residents reportedly gathered in celebration, describing the decision as a moment of relief after a prolonged period of uncertainty.

One resident, Victor Akemor, described the judgement as a sign that the judicial system remains accessible to ordinary citizens. He also appealed to the Delta State Government to support efforts towards ensuring compliance with the court’s order and acknowledged the role played by traditional rulers and legal representatives.

The detained leaders include Prof Arthur Ekpekpo, Mr Julius Oghoroko, Mr Bernard Esegba, Pa Dennis Okugbaye, Chief Belvis Adogbo, Pa Anthony Ahwemuria and Mrs Rita Akata. They were arrested by the military between 18 and 20 August 2024 following the killing of 17 Army officers and soldiers who were reportedly on a peace mission to the community.

Among those detained was Pa James Oghoroko, President-General of the Okuama community, who later died while in custody.

Court records indicate that Justice Nganjiwa had previously granted an order directing that the detainees be produced before the court, although the Army was alleged not to have complied at the time.

The legal proceedings continue as the court prepares to hear the substantive issues in July, but the release order marks a significant development in one of Delta State’s most closely watched community-related cases.
