Sunday Igboho Proposes Private Security Support for Oyo Public Schools After Abduction Crisis

Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has proposed deploying personnel from his private security organisation to public schools across Oyo State amid growing concerns over school safety and insecurity.
The proposal comes nearly a month after the abduction of pupils and teachers during coordinated attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area, an incident that renewed public concern over the protection of learning environments across the state.
In a letter dated 9 June 2026 and addressed to the Oyo State Commissioner for Education, with a copy sent to Governor Seyi Makinde, Igboho, through Iru Ekun Private Security Limited, requested access to information on public schools and their locations to support a proposed security arrangement.
According to the correspondence, the organisation intends to deploy at least two trained security personnel to each identified public school if the proposal receives government approval.
The letter stated that the personnel would be tasked with monitoring school premises, securing access points, working with school authorities and engaging community-based security structures to help prevent unlawful intrusion.
The organisation also advised the state government to consider fencing public schools to improve access control and strengthen protective measures around educational facilities.
While acknowledging ongoing rescue and security efforts by the Oyo State Government and federal agencies, the group stressed the importance of preventive action to reduce future risks.
The proposal further expressed readiness to collaborate with relevant education authorities, including the State Universal Basic Education Board, the Teaching Service Commission, school administrators and local communities to enhance school security.
The move follows the 15 May 2026 abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in Yawota and Esiele communities in Oriire Local Government Area, an incident that intensified discussions around school protection strategies in Oyo State.
Do you think state governments should partner with licensed private security outfits to protect public schools? Should school security remain solely under official security agencies? Let's hear your opinions in the comments.
