First Lady Tinubu Hands N819m Lifeline to Widows of Fallen Soldiers, Police Officers

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has stepped up support for families of Nigeria's fallen heroes, disbursing N819 million to 1,638 widows of military and police personnel who lost their lives in active service.

The gesture, unveiled at the second edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative's Social Investment Programme for Widows of Fallen Heroes in Abuja, saw N657.5 million allocated to 1,315 military widows and N161.5 million shared among 323 police widows. Each beneficiary received N500,000, intended as start-up or expansion capital for personal businesses.

Tinubu told attendees that the funds had already begun landing in recipients' Zenith Bank accounts before the ceremony even began, describing the public presentation as purely symbolic. The scheme covers families of personnel who died in the line of duty since the current administration took office in 2023.

Rather than framing the women as victims, the First Lady praised their resilience, acknowledging the emotional weight of military life and the sacrifices spouses make while their partners serve the nation. Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, who attended the Presidential Villa event, welcomed the continued support as proof of the nation's gratitude towards the families left behind.
