David Mark-Led ADC Drags INEC to Court Over Leadership Dispute

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has entered a high-stakes legal battle with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the commission's decision to de-recognize the leadership faction led by former Senate President, David Mark. In a suit filed on Thursday, April 9, 2026, the Mark-led faction is asking the court to reverse INEC's move and affirm his position as the legitimate National Chairman of the party.
The dispute stems from internal friction within the ADC as it undergoes a massive transformation ahead of the 2027 general elections. While the party has recently gained momentum by attracting political heavyweights and implementing progressive policies—such as its 40% gender quota—it has also been hit by leadership tussles. David Mark’s legal team argues that INEC’s de-recognition is "arbitrary" and fails to respect the internal democratic processes that brought his executive committee into power. They are seeking an injunction to restrain INEC from recognizing any alternative leadership until the matter is resolved.
A prolonged court battle could potentially stall the party’s administrative functions, including its ability to nominate candidates for upcoming off-cycle elections or participate in national planning meetings hosted by the electoral umpire. For the David Mark-led group, the court’s decision will be a defining moment that determines whether they will maintain control of the party’s machinery or if the ADC will face further fragmentation.
With the 2027 cycle already heating up, the ADC must navigate this legal hurdle quickly if it hopes to remain a focused and unified alternative to the dominant APC and PDP.
Do you believe leadership disputes like this strengthen a party's democracy, or are they a distraction that only benefits the ruling party? Share your comments below!
