Cristiano Ronaldo Cleared to Play at 2026 World Cup After FIFA Decision

The world’s football governing body, FIFA, has announced that Cristiano Ronaldo will not be banned from the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite a recent red-card incident.
Ronaldo was initially handed a three-match suspension after being sent off for elbowing an opponent during a World Cup qualifier. However, under a discretionary clause of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the final two matches of the ban have been suspended. This means only one match was served — in Portugal’s final qualifier — giving him clearance to feature in his nation’s opening game at the World Cup.
The suspension reduction effectively puts Ronaldo back in contention for his sixth World Cup. He will be eligible to play as long as he does not commit a similar offence during the one-year probation period set by FIFA.
