Court Defers Judgment on ADC Leadership to April 14

 ADC

The Federal High Court in Abuja has shifted its scheduled ruling in the suit seeking to remove former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to Tuesday, April 14, 2026. The ruling, which was originally anticipated earlier this week, was moved as the legal battle over the party's "Third Force" leadership reaches a critical juncture.

Senator David Mark is approaching the apex court to seek a stay of execution on a previous Court of Appeal judgment that led the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remove his and Aregbesola's names from its official portal on April 1. The legal conflict stems from a suit filed by Nafiu Bala Gombe and supported by others, including Rep. Leke Abejide, who argue that the transfer of leadership from party founder Ralph Nwosu to the Mark-led interim committee in July 2025 was "illegal and unlawful."

The outcome of the April 14 proceedings will be a defining moment for the ADC. If the courts uphold the removal, the party could face a total leadership vacuum ahead of the 2027 election cycle. Conversely, a favorable ruling for Mark and Aregbesola would restore their status and potentially solidify the ADC's position as a major challenger to the APC and PDP. As both the Federal High Court and the Supreme Court prepare to sit, the Nigerian political community is closely watching to see which faction will ultimately hold the reins of the embattled party.

Do you think the involvement of heavyweight "outsiders" like David Mark and Aregbesola helps a smaller party grow, or does it inevitably lead to these types of leadership crises? Share your comments below!
