Fear has gripped residents of Otukpo Local Government Area in Benue State following a devastating early-morning invasion by suspected armed herdsmen on the Otukpo-Nobi community.
The tragedy unfolded between 3:00 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 12, 2026, shortly after the community had concluded the wake and burial rites of an octogenarian resident, Mr. Adaje Okoh. The attackers reportedly stormed the village using guerrilla tactics, opening fire indiscriminately on sleeping residents and setting several thatched houses and property ablaze.
"At least 16 people were killed this morning during the attack. I lost my sister and two of her children... The Fulani entered her house and shot them."
— Comfort Inalegwu, Grieving Resident and Protester
While survivors and local sources maintain that the death toll has climbed to between 16 and 18 victims—including women and children—official figures released by the Benue State Police Command conservative put the death toll at eight, with five others severely injured.
Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has strongly condemned the attack, labeling it a "barbaric and inhuman assault on the sanctity of life." Following the incident, the state's Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, led high-powered tactical teams and operational units to the Nobi community to restore order, establish a security presence, and launch a full-scale investigation into the identities of the perpetrators.
What concrete security measures must the federal and state governments implement to permanently protect vulnerable rural communities in Benue State from these recurring attacks? Drop your comments below!
