At Least 16 Students Killed, 79 Injured in Devastating Kenya Boarding School Fire

Tragedy has struck central Kenya after a horrific overnight fire ripped through a dormitory at a girls' boarding school, killing at least 16 students and leaving 79 others injured.
The incident occurred at the Utumishi Girls' Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County—located about 120 kilometers (74 miles) northwest of the capital city, Nairobi. Kenya's Education Minister, Julius Ogamba, confirmed the casualties on Thursday, May 28, 2026, noting that the institution houses over 800 students.
The government-owned secondary school is uniquely managed and sponsored by the Kenya Police Service, and many of the young girls enrolled are daughters of police officers.
Senior Police Commander Masoud Mwinyi stated that over 50 officers were deployed to search the surrounding areas for traumatized students who may have fled into the night out of shock and fear when the blaze broke out.
“The second door remained closed, and even though my cousin escaped with a leg injury, we've been told many children are injured and some died,” shared Wambui Nderitu, a relative at the scene, who alleged that a matron had opened only one of the dormitory's two main exit doors without properly alerting the children to exit.
The precise cause of the fire remains unknown, and an investigation has been launched to determine if the school strictly adhered to national fire safety manuals.
Boarding school fires are a recurring tragedy in Kenya, with past incidents frequently attributed to electrical faults or arson attacks by students protesting harsh conditions or strict disciplinary guidelines. The country's deadliest school fire took place in 2001 in Machakos County, claiming 67 lives, while a recent fire in late 2024 claimed the lives of 21 young boys at a primary boarding school in Nyeri County.
What measures do you think the Kenyan government and school administrators need to implement to finally put an end to these recurring boarding school fire disasters? Please share your thoughts and condolences in the comments below.
