Artemis II

NASA’s Artemis II astronauts have officially returned to Earth, successfully splashing down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego at 8:07pm ET on Friday, April 10, 2026 (00:07 UTC April 11). The high-stakes return brought an end to a historic 10-day mission that saw humanity travel around the Moon for the first time in over 50 years.
The crew—Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist Christina Koch, and CSA Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen—safely plummeted through the atmosphere in the Orion spacecraft, Integrity, reaching speeds of nearly Mach 33 before their parachute-assisted landing. Following the splashdown, the astronauts were recovered by the USS John P. Murtha and are reported to be in excellent condition.
This was the first crewed mission to the lunar vicinity since Apollo 17 in 1972.
The crew set a new record for the farthest humans have ever traveled from Earth, reaching roughly 252,756 miles away during their sweep around the Moon's far side.
The journey began on April 1, 2026, from Kennedy Space Center, serving as a critical "shakedown cruise" to test life-support and navigation systems ahead of future landings.
This successful test flight paves the way for the Artemis III mission, which aims to land the first woman and first person of color on the lunar surface. For now, the world celebrates the safe return of these four pioneers who have officially reopened the gates to deep space exploration.

With the Moon flyby now complete, do you think NASA should stay the course for a 2027 lunar landing, or should we prioritize building a permanent "Gateway" station first? Share your comments below!
