APC Moves to Back Fubara for Second Term Despite Rift With Wike

Wike and Fubura

The All Progressives Congress has openly signalled strong support for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to secure a second term in office ahead of the 2027 elections, reaffirming confidence in his leadership after his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party earlier this year. APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru made this call while addressing party supporters in Rivers State, urging residents to deliver “massive votes” not only for President Bola Tinubu but for Fubara as well, reflecting a growing effort by the ruling party to consolidate power in the South-South region.

Fubara’s shift to APC has reshaped political alignments in a region historically dominated by the opposition, and party leaders are now positioning him as a central figure in their electoral strategy. The governor is being portrayed by the APC as a political asset whose administration reflects the party’s commitment to governance and development, particularly after his public endorsement of Tinubu’s agenda and mobilisation efforts across Rivers State.

That tension previously triggered institutional crises in Rivers and complicated relations between state and federal actors. Despite past peace efforts, the APC’s move to back Fubara’s re-election bid is widely seen as diminishing Wike’s political sway within the state.

While Fubara continues to affirm his capacity to deliver support for Tinubu in 2027 and to rally his grassroots base, the political landscape in Rivers remains competitive as opposition parties prepare for the governorship contest.
