Afrobeats star Adekunle Gold has shared an emotional account of his lifelong battle with sickle cell disease, recalling a painful moment from his youth when the physical torment drove him to utter despair. Speaking in a recent interview with American media personality Angela Yee, he opened up about the heavy stigmatization he faces as a survivor and how the severity of the condition once made him wish for an end to his life.
The singer revealed that when he was 20 years old, he suffered the most intense and agonizing health crisis of his life. The physical pain was so unbearable that he found himself begging God to take his life. According to the artiste, the sheer extremity of the episode even silenced his mother, who would normally caution him against making negative confessions. "At 20, I had the craziest crisis of my life. I told God to take my life," he recalled. "And my mom couldn't even rebuke me. Normally, she would, but that night, it got to a point where it felt like the only thing that made sense should just happen."
Beyond the physical trauma, Adekunle Gold also spoke out against the ongoing stigmatization surrounding the illness. He revealed that even today, when people discover he lives with sickle cell disease, they often look at him with pity, as if he is fragile or going to pass away soon. Despite these challenges, the singer expressed immense gratitude to God for giving him the strength to keep fighting, surviving, and thriving at the highest levels of the global music industry.
