ADC: We’re concerned Obi, Atiku not working together ahead of 2027

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed concern about what it describes as a lack of collaboration between former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, as Nigeria heads toward the 2027 general elections. Bolaji Abdullahi, the interim national publicity secretary of ADC, spoke on the Morning Show on Arise Television and acknowledged that the situation presents a challenge and a source of worry for the party. ADC officials said the lack of visible cooperation between these two prominent opposition figures could affect broader coalition efforts against the ruling party.
Abdullahi clarified that while the situation is concerning, it should not be viewed as the greatest threat to democracy right now, but it is something ADC wants to see addressed as political positioning accelerates. The party is currently concentrating more on building its nationwide presence and organisational strength, aiming to compete across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory rather than focusing on who will be the eventual presidential candidates. ADC leaders stressed that discussions about the presidential ticket are not yet ongoing internally.
Both Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have had roles in opposition efforts around the ADC coalition. Obi has publicly noted that the coalition still faces unresolved internal questions such as zoning and rotation of key political offices, which he says need clarification to strengthen unity and direction. While Atiku has taken actions such as formalising his party membership with ADC, Obi has not yet taken that step, leaving lingering uncertainty about the depth of their alliance.
