Abducted Edo Seminarian

The Catholic Diocese of Auchi has confirmed the death of a minor seminarian, Emmanuel Alabi, who was kidnapped alongside two others in July 2025 in Edo State. The Church announced the development in a statement by Rev. Fr. Linus Imoedemhe on Wednesday.

On 10 July, armed men stormed the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivianokpodi, killing a civil defence officer and abducting three seminarians – Japhet Jesse, Joshua Aleobua and Emmanuel Alabi. Jesse was released earlier, while Aleobua regained freedom on 4 November 2025.

The Diocese expressed gratitude for the safe return of the two and deep sorrow over Alabi’s death, describing the loss as painful and avoidable. Bishop Gabriel Dunia urged security agencies to step up efforts to protect citizens and warned political leaders against ignoring worsening insecurity ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Church called for prayers for the repose of Alabi’s soul and for peace and healing across the region.
