Former Vice President and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has expressed deep sadness over the passing of legendary Yoruba actor and academic, Dr. Kola Oyewo.
Dr. Oyewo passed away on Friday, June 12, 2026, at the age of 80, drawing a curtain on a brilliant career that spanned over six decades across the stage, screen, and university lecture halls.
In a tribute shared on his verified Facebook page on Saturday, Atiku described the late icon as a giant of African drama whose dedication to the performing arts and academic scholarship left an indelible mark on Nigerian culture and storytelling traditions.
“His passing has created a great void in the world of theatre arts. Dr. Kola Oyewo was a legendary figure whose dedication to acting, teaching, and storytelling made a lasting impact on Nigerian culture. His exceptional portrayal of complex characters brought stories to life, inspiring generations of artists and scholars,” Atiku stated.
Born in March 1946 in Oba Ile, Osun State, Dr. Oyewo was revered not just for his charismatic screen presence, but for his intellectual contributions to African theater. After beginning his professional acting journey in 1964 with the famous Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group, he later advanced his education at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and the University of Ibadan, eventually earning a Ph.D. in Drama.
Atiku extended his heartfelt condolences to the Oyewo family, the global creative arts community, and the government and people of Osun State, praying for the repose of the veteran actor's soul.
Other prominent national figures, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, and veteran filmmaker Kunle Afod, have also paid glowing tributes, remembering Dr. Oyewo as a proud pillar of Yoruba cultural heritage who took his final bow at the pinnacle of honor.
What are your fondest memories of Dr. Kola Oyewo's classic movie roles or stage performances? How best can Nigeria honor the double legacy of its academic-creative icons? Please leave your tributes and comments below!
