Sealed Container
Matthew 5:13–14, 16
“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world; a city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
It is a statement of fact from our Lord Jesus Christ that we are the salt and the light of the world. However, it is clear from the above passage of the Bible that Jesus did not intend for us to be salt and light in a sealed container but that we might have a significant impact in the lives of people that surrounds us.
Jesus had a gigantic effect upon human history. Jesus did not just cause a ripple; His impact was like a tidal wave that circled the globe. Ponder for a second on the properties of salt:
- Flavour
- Preserve
- Penetrate
- It affects everything it touches.
The only one thing that can ruin its flavour is the presence of impurities, so also our impact and influence can be seriously diminished by sin which in turn could make our lives become:
- Tasteless
- Ineffective
- Powerless.
Also let us examine the properties of light:
- Drives out darkness
- Points the way
- Warns of incoming dangers
- Reveals what is there.
Here it becomes abundantly clear that just as sin lessens our “flavour,” it also reduces our light, sin diminishes our influence and effectiveness. We must keep away from all appearances of evil; there is a mandate on our lives to live clean, beyond reproach.
Wise Saying
The fragrance of your future surpasses the odour of your past.
