Wesley Sneijder Says Messi Got “Lucky” in Qatar, Backs Ronaldo’s Portugal for 2026

Former Netherlands midfield great Wesley Sneijder has made headlines by claiming that Argentina were “a bit lucky” to win the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He pointed to their triumph as less certain than many believe, saying:
“It was a great World Cup for Argentina in Qatar but they were a bit lucky as well.”
Sneijder went on to endorse Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal as strong contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Speaking to AdventureGamers, he argued:
“Portugal have a very strong team. For me they are one of the favourites … then I would say Cristiano Ronaldo has the stronger chance of winning the next World Cup compared to Lionel Messi.”
He added another pointed line:
“I think overall Portugal is a better team.”
Sneijder’s comments are fueling the already intense debate over Messi vs. Ronaldo as the 2026 World Cup approaches, especially as both players may still feature despite being in the later stages of their illustrious careers. What do you make of his take, do you agree that Messi’s 2022 win was more luck than legacy, and do you think Ronaldo can finally win the World Cup in 2026? Share your thoughts in the comments.
