Federal Government Resolves Super Eagles’ Bonus Row Ahead of AFCON Quarter-Final

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the full release of all group-stage bonuses for the Super Eagles players currently participating in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. The team had threatened to boycott training and their travel to Marrakech for the crucial quarter-final clash against Algeria over unpaid allowances. The Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, confirmed on Thursday that the administrative bottlenecks and foreign exchange hurdles that caused the delay have been resolved through coordinated action with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
According to the Minister, the funds have cleared all regulatory stages and are already "in flight" to the players' domiciliary accounts. She explained that the delay was primarily due to the complex process of converting the funds into foreign currency, which was the players' preferred mode of payment. To prevent a recurrence, the government has implemented a streamlined, fast-track process for future disbursements. This assurance has effectively calmed the tension in the camp, allowing the team to proceed with their travel plans and focus on their upcoming match.
The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, also reinforced this commitment, noting that President Bola Tinubu had approved the entire AFCON budget as far back as November 2024. He emphasized that the welfare of the players remains a top priority and that all negotiated entitlements, including daily camp allowances, are being handled promptly. With the financial distractions now behind them, the Super Eagles—who have remained unbeaten in the tournament so far—are expected to bring their full focus to the Saturday showdown against the Desert Warriors of Algeria.
