Baba Elegbeje Ado

The Yoruba Nollywood community has been thrown into mourning following the passing of veteran actor and Christian minister, Pastor Taiwo Adeshina, popularly known by his iconic stage name, Elegbeje Ado. The movie legend died on Monday, June 29, 2026, at the age of 66 after a brief illness, leaving colleagues, friends, and legions of fans in deep grief.

The sad news was confirmed on Tuesday by prominent filmmaker and founder of the Best of Nollywood (BON) Awards, Seun Oloketuyi, alongside popular actor Kunle Afod, who both took to social media to pay glowing tributes. Afod described the late actor as a true legend of indigenous cinema, noting that his immense contributions to the growth of Yoruba theater and the joy he brought to households will never be forgotten. Over a career spanning more than two decades, Baba Elegbeje Ado became a household name, heavily celebrated for his commanding and brilliant portrayals of traditional rulers, community elders, and culturally significant figures. His widely recognized stage name was derived from one of his most legendary film roles, which stuck with him throughout his lifetime.

In the latter years of his life, the veteran actor took a step back from secular cinema after answering a spiritual call to ministry. He transitioned into a full-time Christian pastor and dedicated his creative talents entirely to gospel filmmaking, producing the faith-based movie Egberun Odun (One Thousand Years).
