Popular Nollywood actress, Adunni Ade, has broken her silence following a major legal victory at the Lagos State High Court, celebrating a judgment that strongly protects the privacy rights of public figures. The prominent film star took to her official social media page to share court documents confirming the successful outcome of her fundamental rights enforcement lawsuit against Polance Media Limited, the publishers of the online news platform Naija News.
While initial viral social media rumors incorrectly claimed the actress had sued tech giant Google for ₦30 million, official court papers reveal that the legal battle was actually aimed directly at the local media firm. Presided over by Justice I.O. Harrison, the court ruled in favor of Adunni Ade in the suit marked LD/17781MFHR/2024. The judge held that a false and sensationalized online publication linking her to an alleged romantic relationship with a prominent politician severely violated her constitutional right to privacy under Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution and the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023. Consequently, the court awarded ₦20 million in general damages against the media company and ordered the immediate deletion of her name and photograph from the offending article.
Reacting to the final verdict, an ecstatic Adunni Ade emphasized the power of taking legal action against online defamation rather than engaging in messy social media back-and-forths, famously noting that "not every battle needs a response, some need a courtroom." The actress stated that the judgment serves as a powerful reminder that integrity matters and that the internet should not be used as a tool to peddle unverified, malicious falsehoods for web traffic. She further hinted that her legal team is currently pursuing other pending defamation cases, warning online platforms and individuals to be mindful of the content they distribute.
