Trump Sends US Carrier to Latin America Amid Rising War Fears

The United States has deployed the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier and its strike group to Latin America in a major escalation of its anti-drug trafficking operations, sparking fears of conflict in the region.
According to the Pentagon, the deployment aims to disrupt narcotics networks and dismantle transnational criminal organizations. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said a recent strike on a Venezuelan drug gang’s vessel killed six people in international waters, vowing continued operations “day or night.”
The move has heightened tensions with Venezuela, whose President Nicolás Maduro accused Washington of plotting regime change. The UN also cautioned that the use of lethal force should only be a last resort.
Regional leaders, including Brazil’s Celso Amorim, warned that any U.S. intervention could destabilize South America. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump insisted he does not need congressional approval to strike countries tied to drug cartels, saying, “The land is going to be next.”
