Trump, Marijuana Entrepreneur, US-Iraq Envoy

US President Donald Trump has appointed Mark Savaya, a Detroit-based marijuana entrepreneur, as the new US special envoy to Iraq.

Savaya, founder of Leaf and Bud, a cannabis cultivation company, was credited by Trump for helping secure significant votes in Michigan during last year’s election. Trump announced the appointment on Truth Social, praising Savaya’s “deep understanding of the Iraq-US relationship” and his regional connections.

Although Savaya is not Muslim, he hails from the Chaldean community and reportedly played a key role in engaging Muslim-American voters. He expressed his commitment to strengthening US–Iraq relations under Trump’s leadership.

Marijuana remains illegal in Iraq, where major drug trafficking offenses carry the death penalty. Savaya’s appointment continues Trump’s pattern of using special envoys who do not require Senate confirmation.
