Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, are mourning the tragic death of one of their twin sons, Nkanu Nnamdi. The heartbreaking news was confirmed on Thursday, January 8, 2026, through a statement issued by the family’s communications team. According to the report, the young boy passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, after a brief illness. At only 21 months old, his sudden death has left the family and the entire literary community in deep shock and sorrow.
The official statement, signed by Omawumi Ogbe, described the family as being completely devastated by this profound loss. The couple, who usually keep their family life very private, welcomed their twin boys in 2024 through a surrogate. Chimamanda had previously shared her journey with surrogacy during a public event to help other women feel less alone in their fertility struggles. The family has now requested total privacy and space as they deal with this incredibly difficult time. They asked for prayers from the public but stated that they would not be making any further comments regarding the incident.
Chimamanda is one of Nigeria’s most famous voices, and her works have touched millions of people globally. The news of the loss of Nkanu Nnamdi has sparked an outpouring of sympathy on social media, with many Nigerians expressing their pain for the family. In a time when the author should be celebrating her many achievements, she is instead facing the unimaginable pain of burying a child.
The family has appealed to the media and the public to respect their need for seclusion and grace while they mourn in private. It is a very dark period for the Adichie and Esege families, who have always valued their quiet moments away from the spotlight. As they process this heavy grief, the focus remains on supporting the surviving twin and their older daughter.
Please join us in sending prayers and heartfelt condolences to Chimamanda and her family in the comments.
