Tinubu, Tunji Disu, Acting IGP

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to formally swear in Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as the acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on Wednesday, following the sudden resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun earlier this week.

Disu’s appointment comes at a critical time for Nigeria’s security landscape, with rising concerns over banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities across parts of the country. At his decoration ceremony at the State House, Abuja, Tinubu urged the new police chief to restore public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force and strengthen discipline and professionalism within the service.

During that event, which followed Disu’s elevation to acting IGP, the President emphasised his full backing for Disu to tackle prevailing security threats and improve internal cohesion within the force. He also acknowledged the service of Egbetokun, who stepped down from the role citing personal reasons, while committing to a smooth transition in leadership.

Disu, known for his years of experience in various police commands, has promised to implement reforms, including zero tolerance for corruption and impunity, as he prepares to lead Africa’s largest police force. His formal assumption of office at the Force Headquarters in Abuja is expected to follow the swearing-in ceremony.

The appointment will remain in an acting capacity until the Nigeria Police Council reviews his nomination and sends it to the Senate for confirmation, in line with statutory procedures.
