Abia State Rolls Out Cashless Payments for Green Shuttle Buses to Modernise Public Transport

The Abia State Government has begun the full implementation of a cashless payment system for its Green Shuttle Bus Service, aiming to modernise the state’s public transport network and improve commuter experience.
The new initiative, known as the Abia Connect Card or “Abia State Card,” was unveiled as part of efforts by the Ministry of Transportation under Governor Alex Otti’s administration to build a digital, transparent and efficient transport ecosystem across the state.
According to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, the cashless system is intended to eliminate inconveniences associated with cash payments such as delays, disputes over change and revenue leakages by allowing commuters to tap the card upon boarding the shuttle.
The government said the first Abia Connect Card is currently free for residents and can be obtained at designated Green Shuttle terminals and authorised agent locations in Aba and Umuahia. Users must present their ABSSIN to collect the card, while those without one can register through the Abia Pay portal.
Once topped up (with a minimum charge of ₦50), commuters simply tap the card on the payment device, with a confirmation sound indicating successful payment. The card does not expire, and funds remain valid indefinitely.
The state also outlined fares for major routes: ₦800 for Aba–Umuahia and ₦1,000 for Umuahia–Ohafia inter-city trips, while city services within Aba and Umuahia operate at a flat ₦150 fare on designated routes.
The Abia Government described the cashless rollout as a key step towards creating a smarter, more accountable transport system that benefits both residents and the state’s economy.
