Ten Million Nigerians Join NDC in 24 Hours Following Peter Obi’s Defection

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has recorded an unprecedented surge in its membership, with ten million Nigerians reportedly registering with the party within just 24 hours of Peter Obi’s official defection. Adewole Adebayo disclosed this milestone on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, describing the massive influx as a "political earthquake" that has redefined the build-up to the 2027 general elections. The surge followed the announcement that the former Anambra State Governor had moved to the NDC alongside former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

According to Adebayo, the party’s digital registration portals and local ward offices across the 36 states were overwhelmed by citizens eager to align with the new "third force" coalition. He attributed the high registration numbers to the "Obidient" and "Kwankwasiyya" movements, which have effectively merged their structures into the NDC.

While the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has yet to officially react to these figures, the development has already triggered intense debates about the sustainability of the NDC’s growth. Proponents of the party believe this ten-million-strong base provides a solid foundation for a national campaign, while skeptics question whether digital registration will translate into physical votes in 2027. Regardless, the immediate impact has solidified the NDC as a major contender in the race to unseat the incumbent administration.

Do you believe the rapid registration of ten million people is a genuine reflection of the electorate's desire for change, or is it a temporary "hype" following the high-profile defection of Peter Obi? Share your comments below!
