Northern Nigeria Divided as Obi and Kwankwaso Float Joint NDC Ticket

The political landscape of Northern Nigeria is currently witnessing a significant fracture following the official emergence of a joint presidential ticket featuring Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The duo, who formally joined the party on Sunday night at the Abuja residence of former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson, have sent traditional power blocs. While the NDC has moved quickly to consolidate the "Obidient" and "Kwankwaso" movements, the North is increasingly split between those who favor Kwankwaso’s grassroots "Kwankwasiyya" influence and those who remain loyal to the established ruling party and other Northern contenders.

Supporters of the joint ticket argue that the combined record of both men as former governors of Anambra and Kano states offers a credible blueprint for human development and education that transcends ethnic and religious lines. However, critics within the Northern political establishment have labeled the move a "southern-led agenda," warning that Kwankwaso’s acceptance of a joint ticket—potentially as a running mate—might alienate voters who believe the presidency should remain in the North or go to a more traditional Northern candidate.

The division is already manifesting in local political realignments, as several lawmakers and influential power brokers across Kano, Kaduna, and Sokoto are reportedly reconsidering their party affiliations ahead of the May 6 INEC party register deadline. The "NDC move" is described as a game-changer that could consolidate the opposition vote, but it also risks further polarizing the Northern electorate between the "New Nigerians" and the "Old Guard." This internal rift is expected to intensify as the NDC moves toward its national convention to formalize the ticket.

As the 2027 race heats up, the question remains whether this new coalition can successfully navigate the complex ethnic and regional math required to secure a national mandate. With Peter Obi calling for a focus on service rather than control and Kwankwaso urging his supporters to move swiftly to the new platform, the next few weeks will be critical in determining if Northern Nigeria will unite behind this alternative or remain a fragmented battlefield for the major parties.

Do you believe a joint Obi-Kwankwaso ticket can effectively bridge the North-South divide, or will it only deepen the political cracks within Northern Nigeria? Share your comments below!
