Simi, NAPTIP, Controversial Tweets

Popular Afro-pop singer Simisola Bolatito Kosoko, widely known as Simi, is facing intense public scrutiny after a wave of old social media posts resurfaced online, prompting the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to launch a formal investigation into alleged child abuse at a daycare centre linked to her family.

The controversy began when Simi’s recent commentary condemning sexual violence reignited online discussions, leading some critics to dig up tweets she made between 2012 and 2014. Several of those posts referenced interactions with young children while she was helping at her mother’s daycare centre, sparking debate and wide reinterpretation across social media platforms.

In response to the uproar, NAPTIP Director-General Binta Adamu Bello ordered operatives to commence a full-scale investigation into potential child molestation and abuse at the Lagos facility, stating that the agency would act on credible evidence or reports from members of the public.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has also urged authorities to conduct preliminary inquiries. Its leadership emphasised that actual legal action cannot proceed without direct testimony or evidence from any alleged victims, highlighting procedural limits in prosecuting allegations based on historical posts alone.

Simi has defended herself publicly, insisting that the older tweets were innocent and taken out of context, and stressing her long-standing stance against sexual violence. Her team reportedly removed some of the older posts due to their sensitive nature as the controversy gained traction.

Social media reaction remains fiercely divided, with some users calling for accountability and others backing the singer, arguing that old posts should not be used to fuel allegations without substantiated proof.
