Russia, U.S., Nuclear Drone

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced the successful test of the Poseidon, a nuclear-capable and nuclear-powered underwater drone, despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s warnings against further weapons testing.

The test, conducted a day after Russia’s trial of the long-range Burevestnik cruise missile, marks Moscow’s second nuclear weapons demonstration in a week. Putin claimed the Poseidon drone, which can travel faster and deeper than any submarine, is “impossible to intercept” and capable of reaching any continent.

According to Russian state media, the device can dive over one kilometre deep, move at speeds up to 70 knots, and carry a two-megaton nuclear warhead.

Trump criticised the test, urging Putin to end the ongoing war in Ukraine, now nearing its fourth year. He recently cancelled a planned summit with the Russian leader in Budapest, citing Moscow’s unwillingness to negotiate peace.

Putin first unveiled both the Burevestnik and Poseidon systems in 2018 as part of Russia’s strategy to counter Western dominance and assert military superiority.
