Russia Conducts Nuclear Drills Amid Rising NATO Tensions

Russia, NATO Tensions

Russia held its scheduled strategic nuclear drills on Wednesday, just a week after NATO began similar annual exercises over the North Sea, intensifying military tensions across Europe.

President Vladimir Putin, speaking during a televised meeting, emphasized that the drills were “planned” and part of regular nuclear force training. The exercises included mock launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles from a submarine in the Barents Sea and another from a northern Russian cosmodrome, alongside simulated air missile strikes by strategic bombers.

The drills come as peace efforts in the Ukraine conflict continue to stall, following U.S. President Donald Trump’s suspension of talks with Putin. Recent Russian air incursions in Poland and Estonia have also raised NATO’s alert levels.

Moscow has warned of a severe response if Ukraine receives U.S. Tomahawk missiles, calling such moves a major escalation.
