Reps Urge FG to Establish Buruli Ulcer Laboratory in Benue State

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government, through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), to establish a diagnostic and treatment laboratory for Buruli ulcer in Benue State.
This followed a motion sponsored by Hon. Terseer Ugbor, representing Kwande/Ushongo Federal Constituency. Ugbor explained that the disease, locally called “Ambi,” has plagued communities in Benue, especially in Ushongo Local Government Area, for over a decade.
Buruli ulcer, caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans, leads to painless nodules and swelling, often on the limbs, and can cause severe tissue damage if untreated. Ugbor noted that despite effective treatment options, the lack of diagnostic facilities forces samples to be sent to Lagos, resulting in delays and misdiagnoses.
The House called on the Federal Ministry of Health and NCDC to establish a well-equipped laboratory in Ushongo and intensify research into the disease. It also directed the Committee on Healthcare Services to ensure compliance and report back within four weeks.
