Picasso, Missing Painting, Spain

Spanish police have recovered Pablo Picasso’s Still Life with Guitar, a 1919 artwork valued at around €600,000 ($700,000), which vanished earlier this month while being transported from Madrid to Granada.

The gouache and pencil piece, owned by a private Madrid collector, was due to feature in an exhibition at the CajaGranada Foundation. However, when the truck’s contents were unpacked on 6 October, curators discovered the Picasso was missing.

Police investigations now suggest the painting may never have been loaded onto the transport vehicle. Authorities have not disclosed where it was found but released images showing experts examining the recovered piece.

The CajaGranada Foundation expressed relief and hopes the artwork will still join the exhibition, which runs until 11 January.

Picasso’s works, highly sought after by collectors and thieves alike, have often been the target of major heists. The Spanish-born artist, who died in 1973, remains one of the most influential figures in modern art.
