Peter Obi Blasts Leaders for Prioritizing 2027 While Nigerians Face Slaughter

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has issued a scathing critique of Nigeria’s political class following a fresh wave of deadly attacks in Borno State. In a statement released on Friday, March 6, 2026, Obi expressed deep sadness over the continuous loss of innocent lives, lamenting that while Nigerians are being "slaughtered daily" by insurgents and bandits, the nation’s leaders are preoccupied with "political permutations" for the 2027 general elections.
Obi’s reaction comes in the wake of reports detailing another brutal assault on farming communities in the North-East, which left several villagers dead and many others displaced. The former Anambra State Governor argued that the primary duty of any government is the protection of lives and property, a duty he believes is being neglected in favor of power-seeking. He noted that the "obsessive focus" on the next election cycle, more than a year away, is a height of insensitivity to the families mourning their loved ones.
"It is heart-wrenching to see the level of insecurity persisting across the country, especially the recent killings in Borno," Obi stated. He emphasized that no nation can achieve progress or development when its citizens live in constant fear of being killed. He called on the federal government and security agencies to move beyond rhetoric and implement more decisive actions to reclaim ungoverned spaces and ensure the safety of rural dwellers who are the backbone of the nation's food security.
The Labour Party leader further urged Nigerians to hold their leaders accountable, insisting that governance should be about solving the immediate, life-threatening problems facing the masses rather than securing future political offices.
Do you agree with Peter Obi that politicians are too focused on 2027 while the country’s security situation worsens, or is this just part of the usual political discourse? Share your comments below!
