Oluremi Tinubu Calls on Nigerians to Abandon ‘Entitlement Mentality’

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged Nigerians to shift their mindset away from what she described as an "entitlement mentality" and instead embrace a spirit of hard work and self-reliance. First Lady emphasized that the government alone cannot solve every individual problem and that citizens must take proactive steps toward personal and communal development to ensure national progress.
Senator Tinubu noted that while the current administration is working to implement policies that will benefit the majority, the culture of expecting the government to provide for every basic need is a hindrance to growth. She argued that the "Renewed Hope" agenda requires a partnership where citizens are willing to contribute their quota through entrepreneurship, agriculture, and vocational skills. According to her, a nation can only truly prosper when its people move from a state of dependency to a state of active productivity.
While she acknowledged the hardships being faced, she encouraged Nigerians to look within and find creative ways to sustain themselves rather than waiting for "handouts." She pointed to her various empowerment programs for women and youth as examples of how the government can provide a platform, but ultimately, the individual must be willing to do the work.
The public have criticized the statement as being disconnected from the harsh realities of the average Nigerian. Critics argue that until the government addresses systemic issues like power supply, security, and infrastructure, it is difficult for individuals to thrive independently.
Do you agree with the First Lady that Nigerians rely too much on the government, or is it the government's responsibility to provide a safety net before asking for self-reliance? Share your comments below!
