Oyedele, Tax Reforms,

The newly sworn-in Minister of State for Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, has promised to ensure the effective implementation of Nigeria’s tax reforms, stressing that policies must translate into tangible results for the economy.

Oyedele made the pledge shortly after taking the oath of office administered by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he addressed State House correspondents on Monday.

He emphasised that the success of the reforms would depend on diligent execution rather than policy formulation alone, noting that reforms are only meaningful when they are properly implemented.

According to the minister, his immediate priorities include revenue mobilisation, improved spending efficiency, debt management and fiscal sustainability to strengthen Nigeria’s economic framework.

Oyedele explained that increasing government revenue would help meet growing public demands on the treasury at both federal and sub-national levels while ensuring that available resources are used more efficiently.

He also assured Nigerians and the President that he would give his best in office, expressing confidence that the Ministry of Finance team would work together to overcome the challenges ahead.

President Tinubu, during the ceremony, commended Oyedele for his role in overhauling Nigeria’s tax policy framework, describing the previous system as outdated and in need of reform.

The tax reform programme, which took effect on January 1, 2026, consolidated more than 60 different taxes into fewer than 10 statutes, while also introducing relief measures such as zero income tax for Nigerians earning ₦800,000 annually or less and tax exemptions for small businesses with turnover below ₦100m.
