Ogun 2027: "I Am Here to Win" – Iyabo Obasanjo Dismisses Rumors of Stepping Down

Iyabo Obasanjo

Former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has officially cleared the air regarding her intentions for the Ogun State governorship seat, firmly stating that she is not in the race to serve as a placeholder or to eventually step down for another candidate. Responding to critics and political detractors on Saturday, February 28, 2026, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo emphasized that her campaign is built on a genuine desire to transform the state and provide an alternative to the current political status quo.

The rumors, which had been circulating within the state's political circles, suggested that her entry into the race was a strategic move to negotiate a better position or to clear the path for a specific heavyweight candidate. However, Iyabo Obasanjo debunked these claims, describing them as the "old tactics" of those intimidated by her vision. She maintained that her track record as a former Commissioner and Senator speaks for itself, and she is fully committed to the long-haul battle for the Oke-Mosan Government House in 2027.

Addressing her supporters, she noted that the challenges facing Ogun State—ranging from infrastructure deficits to the need for enhanced industrialization—require a leader with both experience and an independent mind. She urged the electorate to focus on her manifesto and plans for the state rather than the "distraction of gender-based or lineage-focused politics." Her firm stance has sent a strong signal to opposition parties and internal rivals that she intends to be a formidable contender on the ballot.

For now, she remains focused on grassroots mobilization, insisting that the ultimate decision lies with the people of Ogun State, not behind-the-scenes political brokers.

Do you believe Iyabo Obasanjo has what it takes to lead Ogun State, or is her candidacy likely to be overshadowed by the influence of other political heavyweights? Share your comments below!
