Nollywood Star Alex Ekubo Passes Away at 40

The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into deep mourning following the sudden death of popular Nollywood actor, Alex Ekubo.

The news of his passing broke on Tuesday afternoon, May 12, 2026, after it was reported that he died from complications related to cancer. Alex, who was just 40 years old, had reportedly been battling health issues in private for some time, with sources revealing he was rushed to the hospital on Monday and placed on life support before he finally gave up the ghost.


Colleagues and close friends in the movie industry have taken to social media to express their shock and heartbreak over the loss. Veteran actress Funke Akindele and actor Bolanle Ninalowo both confirmed the sad news on their Instagram pages, sharing emotional tributes to the man many called a "rare soul." One of his close associates, Godwin Nnadiekwe, also revealed that the actor seemed to have sensed his end was near as he had already prepared his will before his passing. The news has left fans across the country devastated, as Alex was known for his charm and great acting in many blockbuster films.


Before his death, Alex Ekubo had been relatively quiet on social media, with his last post dating back to late 2024, which had caused fans to worry about his whereabouts. Now that the reason for his disappearance has been revealed as a battle with a serious illness, the outpouring of love from Nigerians has been massive. As of now, his family has not released an official statement, but many are already calling his death a huge blow to Nollywood.
