National Assembly to Address Reported Discrepancies in Gazetted Tax Laws
Omoyeni Olabode

The National Assembly has announced plans to clarify alleged discrepancies in the version of Nigeria’s new tax laws that were published in the official gazette, following public concerns and mixed versions circulating online. The leadership of the National Assembly said it will review and explain any variations between the bills passed by lawmakers and the texts that were formally gazetted after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s assent late last year. This move aims to reassure Nigerians about the integrity of the legislative process and the content of the laws set to commence on January 1, 2026.
Speaking on behalf of the Senate and House of Representatives, officials explained that gazettement is an administrative step that publishes laws for public notice after presidential assent but does not change the substantive content passed by the legislature. Lawmakers emphasised that if any variation arises from clerical or formatting differences between the passed bills and the gazetted copies, these will be formally addressed through official explanations or corrective actions. The National Assembly also reiterated that the legal force of a law remains rooted in the versions passed by lawmakers and assented to by the President, not solely in how they appear in gazette publications.
As Nigeria moves toward the January 1 implementation date, clarifications from the legislature are expected to calm uncertainties and support compliance by taxpayers.
What do you think about the National Assembly’s decision to address these concerns openly, and how important is clear communication on tax reform for businesses and individuals? Comment below and share your thoughts.
