NANS, Mandatory Drug Tests

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged tertiary institutions across Nigeria to introduce compulsory drug testing for both new and graduating students.

NANS President, Olushola Oladoja, made the call during a sensitisation campaign in Abuja, emphasising that the move would curb substance abuse and promote discipline on campuses.

According to Oladoja, the proposed tests should be supervised by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and health units of each institution. He also recommended establishing Drug-Free Clubs to provide counselling, awareness, and peer education, ensuring that students who misuse substances receive rehabilitation rather than stigma.

The NDLEA has supported similar proposals, suggesting random testing throughout the academic year to ensure safe learning environments. However, some stakeholders have expressed concern about logistics, costs, and privacy issues.

Oladoja stressed that a drug-free student community is essential for moral and intellectual growth, urging collaboration among the government, institutions, and civil society to achieve lasting change.
