Showmax Shutdown

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the African media and tech landscape, MultiChoice Group has announced its decision to shut down its video-on-demand streaming service, Showmax. The announcement, made on Thursday, March 5, 2026, marks the end of an eleven-year journey for the platform, which was launched in 2015 to compete with global giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video across the African continent.

The decision comes as a surprise to many, especially following the recent "Showmax 2.0" relaunch and the heavy investment in the Peacock-powered platform in partnership with Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky. Despite its vast library of local content and its popular "Showmax Pro" offering for live sports, the service has reportedly faced significant headwinds, including fluctuating currency valuations, high operational costs, and stiff competition from both global streamers and emerging local players.

MultiChoice, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, stated that the move is a strategic pivot to streamline its business model and focus on its core satellite broadcasting services and other integrated digital ventures. While the specific timeline for the final "lights out" has not been fully detailed, the company assured current subscribers that there will be a phased transition period, with more information regarding billing and account migrations to be released in the coming weeks.

Showmax was lauded for its "hyper-local" content strategy—producing hit originals like The Real Housewives franchises and The Real North—the high cost of data and the economic squeeze on African households have made the path to profitability difficult. As the sun sets on Showmax, the focus now shifts to how MultiChoice intends to retain its digital-first audience and what this means for the future of African content production.
