Defection in Jigawa

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Jigawa State has received a major boost following the defection of over 4,500 members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). The defectors largely from the Birnin Kudu Local Government Area, officially switched allegiance on Friday, February 6, 2026. This mass movement is a significant blow to the opposition's strength in the state ahead of future political contests.

The defectors were led by prominent local leaders who cited the "developmental strides" and "inclusive leadership" of the current APC administration as their primary reasons for joining. During a reception ceremony held to welcome the new members, APC state officials described the move as a testament to the party's growing popularity and its ability to deliver on its promises to the grassroots. They assured the newcomers of equal treatment and opportunities within the party hierarchy.

Leaders of the defecting groups expressed frustration with the internal crises and perceived lack of direction within the PDP and NNPP at the state level. They noted that their decision to join the ruling party was a strategic move to ensure their communities remain connected to the center of governance and benefit from ongoing infrastructure projects. The APC leadership in Jigawa has promised to integrate the new members into its various committees to strengthen the party's unit-level mobilization.

Does this mass defection signal the end of a strong opposition in Jigawa, or is it just a temporary shift in political loyalty? Share your comments below!
