Magnitude 6.3 Earthquake Strikes Northern Afghanistan

A powerful magnitude 6.3 earthquake shook northern Afghanistan early Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake, which struck at a depth of 28 kilometres near Mazar-i-Sharif, sent residents fleeing into the streets in fear of collapsing buildings.
While no immediate casualties or major damage were reported, emergency response efforts are expected to be slowed by poor infrastructure and limited communication networks.
The tremor adds to Afghanistan’s string of natural disasters in recent years. In August, a 6.0-magnitude quake in the east killed more than 2,200 people, while earlier quakes in Herat (2023) and Nangarhar (2022) claimed hundreds of lives.
Experts warn that Afghanistan’s fragile housing, economic hardship, and isolation have left the country dangerously vulnerable to such disasters.
