Lamine Yamal and Ronaldo

Barcelona and Spain winger Lamine Yamal has played down comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo after he was named Best Forward of the Year at the 2025 Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai. The 18-year-old, widely regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in world football, said he prefers to focus on forging his own identity and career rather than being measured against past greats like Ronaldo, even as the Portuguese legend was present at the ceremony.

Speaking after receiving the award, Yamal said, “It’s best not to compare yourself to anyone,” adding that “Players like Cristiano Ronaldo did what they did because they wanted to be themselves and not compare themselves to others.” He then emphasised his personal ambition, declaring “I want to build my own path.” This sentiment reflects his desire to focus on developing his unique strengths and style as his career progresses.

Yamal’s remarks attracted attention because they came during an evening celebrating some of football’s biggest names, including Ronaldo, who was named Best Middle East Player at the same awards. Observers said the young forward’s outlook illustrates a maturity beyond his age, as he seeks to navigate high expectations without being defined solely by the achievements of others.

What do you think about Yamal’s approach to comparisons with football legends, and how important is it for young stars to carve their own identity? Comment below and share your thoughts.
