Lagos Health Commissioner, Save Accident Victims Before Filming

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has called on residents to prioritise saving lives during accidents instead of recording videos.

Speaking at a World Trauma Day symposium themed “Reducing Needless Deaths on Our Roads: Everybody’s Responsibility”, Abayomi decried the increasing loss of lives due to delays caused by bystanders filming crash scenes.

Represented by Dr Olawale Adegbite, he urged Lagosians to respect ambulances and assist emergency responders, emphasising that trauma care begins with public responsibility. He noted that the government was strengthening emergency systems and expanding trauma centres across Epe, Eti-Osa, and Badagry through public-private partnerships.

Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, highlighted recent initiatives, including the deployment of emergency ambulance bikes and high-dependency units to improve rapid response.

Officials from LASAEC and FRSC also underscored the need for safer road behaviour, stating that preventable human errors remain the main cause of road deaths.

The event concluded with a collective call for civic responsibility and improved cooperation to reduce avoidable fatalities on Lagos roads.
