The Lagos State Government has announced traffic diversions and road closures in anticipation of the Eko 170 cycling race scheduled for Sunday, January 12, 2026. The event is expected to attract large numbers of athletes and spectators as top cyclists compete in one of the city’s major competitive rides. Officials said the diversions are necessary to ensure the safety of participants and smooth flow of vehicles in unaffected areas during the race. (guardian.ng)
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), certain major roads will be temporarily closed or restricted from early Sunday morning until after the race. Motorists traveling toward the Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Lekki axes will be asked to follow alternative routes, while LASTMA officials and traffic wardens will be deployed along key corridors to manage flow and provide directions. Drivers were advised to use Kirikiri, Apapa Oshodi Expressway, Herbert Macaulay Way and Surulere link roads as suggested detours to avoid potential congestion.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Olajide Oduyoye, urged the public to plan trips around the scheduled event and cooperate with traffic authorities. He said the Eko 170 race is part of Lagos State’s efforts to promote healthy lifestyles and non-motorised transport options while showcasing the city as a centre for sports and tourism. Oduyoye also said the event will feature strategic water and medical support points along the route to ensure participant welfare.
Residents are advised to expect delays on Sunday morning and to follow official traffic updates on social media and local radio announcements. What’s your view on hosting large-scale sporting events in Lagos and how traffic management should be handled? Comment below and share your thoughts.
